Explosive power fades earliest

Where outcomes depend on reading a situation, anticipating an opponent or executing a refined technique, experience contributes directly to performance.

That contribution grows for years, so it can outweigh a gradual physical decline and push the peak later than physiology alone would predict.

Positions within a single team sport show the same split, with roles demanding repeated sprinting peaking earlier than roles built around positioning and decision-making.

Injury history reshapes individual curves

An average peak age describes a population, and any individual's trajectory is dominated by whether they have avoided serious injury.

Some injuries impose a permanent reduction in a specific capacity, which effectively moves an athlete into a different competitive profile.

Careers also end for reasons unrelated to capability, including selection decisions and the economics of a squad, so retirement age is a poor proxy for decline.

Rules and equipment shift the curve over time

Changes to competition formats, recovery science and travel schedules have extended careers across many sports over recent decades.

Equipment that reduces the physical cost of participation shifts the balance towards experience, while rule changes that increase pace shift it back towards youth.

Peak age is therefore a property of a sport at a moment rather than a fixed biological fact, and it has moved measurably within living memory.
