Packaging alone is significant for smaller items, where the box, the label and the handling can rival the manufacturing cost of the part inside.

Inventory has to be held for years

Manufacturers commit to supplying parts long after a model leaves production, which means holding stock that may not be requested for a decade.

That stock occupies warehouse space, ties up capital and risks obsolescence if the remaining fleet disappears faster than the inventory does.

Slow-moving items therefore carry higher margins by design, because the price has to cover the cost of having been available at all.

Distribution runs through several layers

Parts typically pass from manufacturer to a central distribution operation, then to regional depots, then to a dealer or workshop, each adding handling and margin.

Speed of supply is what the network sells, since a vehicle waiting for a part is a cost to its owner and a bay occupied at the workshop.

Maintaining that responsiveness requires stock positioned close to demand, which multiplies the inventory held across the whole network.

Assemblies are increasingly sold whole

Modern components arrive as modules combining several functions, and where the module is not designed to be opened, a single failure requires replacing the entire unit.

Integration reduces assembly cost and improves reliability, but it shifts repair from replacing a small item to replacing a large one.

Electronic modules add a further step, since many require configuration to the specific vehicle before they will function, which brings labour and equipment into the price.

Alternative supply exists at different risk

Independent manufacturers produce equivalent parts, sometimes from the same factories that supply the assembly line, and these are generally cheaper.

Reclaimed parts from dismantled vehicles form another market, priced far lower but with condition and remaining life that vary considerably.

Which route is appropriate depends on the component, since the consequences of failure differ enormously between a trim clip and a braking component.
